Sarah Bernstein is a violinist, composer and vocalist forging a unique expression. Her work relies on unfiltered musical emotion, instrumental improvisation, original spoken text, and sound design. Sarah is originally from San Francisco, where as a youth she performed in new music and improvisation settings. She received a BFA in violin performance from the California Institute of the Arts, where she studied the music of contemporary western composers, North Indian classical music, South Indian rhythm and West African drumming. After arriving in New York in 1996, she received her masters degree in jazz studies from Queens College, where her primary teacher was Sir Roland Hanna. She also continued classical violin and pedagogy studies with Shirley Givens.
Sarah is much sought after for her diverse abilities as a violinist. She has worked with composer-trumpeter Dave Scott, Adam Rudolf’s Go:Organic Orchestra, Rob Reddy's Small Town, Johnny Almendra y Los Jovenes Del Barrio, Barbez, the Pulse Ensemble, Marina Rosenfeld, the Living Theater, the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Maria Benjumeda, and Mamadou Sidibe. Her own compositions range from classical chamber music to jazz forms to solo electronic mixed-media work. Current original projects include Iron Dog and Sarah Bernstein Unearthish.
